ABSTRACT

Introduction@#The Hearing for Life (HeLe) is a novel newborn hearing screening device initially designed according to specifications of clinicians of the Philippine National Ear Institute (PNEI). Unfortunately, targeted end-users, rural health workers, had difficulty using it. This research applied the user-centered design (UCD) methodology involving rural health workers in recommending design, content, and function requirements for HeLe. @*Objectives@#This study aims to 1) describe how UCD was applied in a time-limited and resource-constrained environment, 2) assess the usability of the design prototypes, and 3) recommend design, content, and function requirements for HeLe. @*Methods@#This research is a descriptive study using mixed methods. Six rural health units (RHU) involved in the HeLe research program were purposively selected for the study. There were 30 participants included, five health care workers per RHU. Applying the UCD method, the study had three phases: 1) user profiling (where participants accomplished a survey questionnaire, 2) inspiration phase (focus group discussions, workflow analysis, and interviews with a technical expert were conducted), and 3) ideation phase (designing and assessment of prototypes were done). @*Results@#Participatory methods and structured procedures (i.e., card sorting, MoSCoW matrix prototyping, etc.) were applied to help determine and prioritize user requirements and elicit user feedback. These methods were chosen considering the time and resource constraints in the RHU. The prototype's System Usability Scale (SUS) score (81.94) was higher than the SUS score previously obtained (68) from the older version of the interface. Accuracy, durability, in-app instructions, feedback, and an easily understood interface were the most requested requirements for the telemedicine device. The need for the technology to be aligned with the RHU's workflow and available resources was highlighted in the focus group discussions. @*Conclusions@#The study documents practices and lessons learned in applying UCD methodology in design and development that have been demonstrated to improve usability of the device. The involvement of the users surfaced in the design, content, and functional requirements which can guide future iterations of HeLe and contribute to better understanding of ways to develop user-friendly telemedicine devices in the Philippines. This paper emphasizes that users should be involved in the entire process and not just recipients of the technology.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: the identification of patients at higher risk of progressing to kidney failure is essential for treatment planning in chronic kidney disease, but it has not been possible to do this consistently. Predictive models could be a useful tool, however, their usability in chronic kidney disease is limited and the barriers and limitations are not well understood. Methods: a scoping review of the available literature on ESRD predictive models or prognostic rules in chronic kidney disease patients was developed. Searches were systematically executed on Cochrane, MEDLINE, and Embase. a blind and independent review was carried out by two evaluators to identify studies that reported on the development, validation, or impact assessment of a model constructed to predict the progression to an advanced stage of chronic kidney disease. A critical evaluation of the quality of the evidence provided with the GRADE system (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) was made. Findings: of 1279 articles found, 19 studies were included for the final qualitative synthesis. Most of the studies were primary, with retrospective observational designs and a few corresponded to systematic reviews. No clinical practice guidelines were found. The qualitative synthesis showed high heterogeneity in the development of the models, as well as in the reporting of global performance measures, internal validity, and the lack of external validity in most of the studies. The evidence rating was of low overall quality, with inconsistency between studies and important methodological limitations. Conclusions: most of the available predictive models have not been adequately validated and, therefore, are of limited use to assess the individual prognosis of patients with chronic kidney disease. Therefore, additional efforts are required to focus the development and implementation of predictive models on external validity and usability and bridge the gap between generation, synthesis of evidence, and decision-making in the field of patient care.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Considerable numbers of individuals present low vision, blindness, illiteracy and other conditions that could possibly impair their identification of medications, such as eye drops. Through helping these individuals to identify their eye drops, they can achieve greater autonomy. Misidentification can be avoided through use of multisensory sleeves that can be adapted to most eye drop bottles. Correct use of eye drops is important for preventing progression of diseases like glaucoma that could potentially lead to blindness. OBJECTIVE: To develop bottle sleeves to aid in identification of eye drops and then interview a group of possible users to evaluate the acceptance of the solution. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional survey performed at an ophthalmological clinic in São Paulo (SP), Brazil. METHODS: We describe the development of multisensory sleeves to assist in identification of eye drops. To assess the acceptance of this solution, we interviewed 18 patients who were currently using three or more types of eye drops. RESULTS: We developed four prototypes for eye drop bottle sleeves and conducted an acceptance test on them. Most of the patients who answered the survey about the sleeves were elderly. Most (95%) reported believing that the sleeves would help reduce the risk of mixing up eye drops with other medications that also dispense drops. They also believed that these would increase their autonomy in using eye drops. CONCLUSION: The solution presented was well accepted and may help increase safety in using eye drops through preventing misidentification.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article presents the results of a heuristic usability evaluation applied to 17 websites of libraries of public chilean universities, using the SIRIUS method "System of Web Usability Evaluation, User Oriented and Based on the Determination of Critical Tasks" For data collection, SIRIUS fixed guideline was used, which contains 10 heuristics that are subdivided into a total of 83 sub-heuristics evaluated by 5 experts with knowledge about libraries and usability websites. The results indicate that the best evaluated university libraries have good labeling mechanisms, layout and ease of interaction, while, as a whole, the websites lack navigation aids for their users. Finally, it is concluded that heuristic evaluation is a valid, fast, easy and applicable method in university library websites, as long as experts and heuristics are properly defined. Likewise, SIRIUS is an adequate tool since it has a fixed guideline that allows evaluations to be obtained quickly and to facilitate the comparison of its results.

ABSTRACT

@#Online health information have a role in enhancing health in older adults. However, age-related physiological changes and non-senior friendly websites proved to be a challenge for older adults. Research investigating older adults’ preferences of features in health information websites is limited. Thus, in this review, we aim to summarize older adults’ preferences regarding the design and content of health websites. Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) and Google Scholar were searched for relevant articles in February 2018, using key words ‘older adults’, ‘Internet’, ‘health information’ and ‘usability’. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated using the McMaster critical appraisal tools by two independent reviewers. Individual study design, participants’ characteristics, and identified preferences for health website features were extracted and summarized narratively. (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42018096281). Five studies (3 qualitative, 2 quantitative) were included in this review. The quality appraisal score ranged from 32% to 83%. The web feature preferences of older adults were grouped into three domains: web presentation factors, web navigation factors and health information preferences. The results highlight older adults have specific preferences when engaging with online content. This review suggests that readable text, simple design, consistent layout and straightforward web navigation are the preferred priorities for a health information website for older adults. Findings from this review may be useful to healthcare professionals and developers to understand older adults’ preferences pertaining to web design and contents in health websites specifically designed for this population.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pilot usability used in a telenursing-based cancer pain monitoring system. Health care providers and advanced cancer patients who visited a hospital as outpatients (n=10/group) used and evaluated the system using a Web Usability Scale (WUS) and free description. Of the WUS seven factors, “comprehensibility” and “content reliability” received good evaluation, and “ease of operation”, “visual effects”, “responsiveness”, “usefulness”, and “acceptablity” didn’t received good evaluation. In the free description, the system was evaluated to enhance self-management of cancer pain, a request for expansion of operation, and social issues were shown. Improving patient usability is an issue, and sufficient orientation is required to verify the effects.

ABSTRACT

Objective: While pharmacies focus on interpersonal work, patients need to process a lot of information. Therefore, it is important for the pharmacy to provide information according to the situation. This study was conducted for the purpose of providing a video and paper media, and clarifying that it is useful to provide information in various mediums about the method of administering the powdered medicine, which requires an understanding of the operation.Method: Conducted a survey for those who brought prescriptions for infants from March 2016 to about a year and a half. We compared and verified the understanding of the medication method for infants between the paper medium group and the moving image medium group. Results: Differences in the background between the two media use groups were clarified, and path analysis confirmed differences in the factors that affect the reliable administration of each medium to infants. It was revealed that the evaluation of moving image media was higher than the comparison between the groups in terms of usability. Although there was no difference in the ability to use the medium at his own pace, the moving images were significantly higher in understanding the motion.Discussion: There is a limit to the understanding of motions with a single explanation at the pharmacy counter. It was confirmed in this study that information provision using a medium that can be used depending on the situation of the patient is useful as a complementary role in medication instruction. Providing information while appropriately combining information provision in various media is thought to reduce the burden on patients and contribute to improved adherence.

ABSTRACT

This qualitative study aimed to analyzing resorts sites, based on information management and sites usability and also investigated the diffusion of the recreation program. An exploratory research was conducted aiming to investigating those sites, which were evaluated based on Information Management and Usability of sites Theories. A priori categories for data analysis were created and results indicate precariousness information about the offered recreation activities do not motivate the adherence to the practice. In addition, resorts' websites do not meet all of the usability criteria, making it difficult for users to search for information, which may lead to sales compromises due to such site failures. New studies are suggested relating to these themes involving technologies, tourism, recreation and leisure.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the usability of and satisfaction with two types of computer-aided design (CAD) software among users who had experience with dental implant CAD software and those who did not. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental technicians (n = 20) who had previous experience with dental implant CAD Software and students from the College of Dentistry (n = 12) who had never designed implant custom abutments were asked to evaluate two types of CAD Software, Exocad and Deltanine. In addition, the participants were asked to fill out a structured questionnaire (Section 1: Entering basic information and retrieving files; Section 2: Setting conditions before abutment design; Section 3: Setting abutment design; and Section 4: Overall satisfaction). For the statistical analysis of the collected data, Mann-Whitney U test was used (α = .05). RESULTS: The ease of design and satisfaction with the implant CAD Software, evaluated with respect to 21 statements divided into four Stages, were significantly higher for Exocad in both groups for Secion 1. For Sections 2 and 3, participants with experience evaluated Deltanine to be significantly better. For Section 4, both groups evaluated Exocad Software to be better. CONCLUSION: Overall, the Exocad Software was evaluated as having better usability and offering greater satisfaction. However, in terms of performance in the core of the design process, i.e. Sections 2 and 3, Deltanine was rated higher by the experienced users. Thus, if the user interface design parts are supplemented, Deltanine CAD Software could be put to a wider use in clinics.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The long treatment duration of glaucoma and multiple drug use have decreased patient adherence to anti-glaucoma drugs. This has prompted the recent marketing of a combination drug, Xalacom ® Combination Eye Drops (hereinafter referred to as the original drug), and its generic drugs (3 generics). In this study, we compared these eye drops from a pharmaceutical viewpoint, conducted research on usability, and evaluated the selection criteria for generics. Methods: The viscosity and pH of the original drug and its generics were measured. The total number of drops per container, mean mass per drop, and the squeeze force needed for one drop of individual eye drops were measured using a digital force gauge. In addition, a questionnaire survey on the usability of each eye drop was conducted in patients. Results: The total number of drops in the contain of the original drug and generics tested almost the same. The mean mass per drop of generics from two companies was significantly lower than that of the original drug, and the squeeze force of the generic from one company was significantly lower than that of the original drug. The usability of the containers some generics was significantly higher than that of the original drug. Conclusion: No difference was observed in the total number of available drops between the original drug and generics. However, differences in squeeze force and usability were observed between the original drug and generics and among the generics. This information should preferably be described in the interview form, patient instruction manual, etc. for providing medication instructions to pharmacists. All products investigated in this study contained more than 100 drops in the containers. The expiration date of tested eye drops after opening is about one month. Reducing the volume of filling into a container may be contribute to the medical economy and avoid the risk of microbial contamination.

ABSTRACT

The use of the Internet and virtual social networks by people with disabilities is increasing, since it can lead to the formation of support networks, sharing of experiences and obtaining information. In this sense, there is a concern on the part of the researchers to develop virtual tools, which provide an accessible virtual experience for people with disabilities, associated with security, data privacy and usability. The evaluation of usability, in websites and technologies for people with disabilities, increases access and engagement. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze strategies for dissemination, access and evaluate the usability of the virtual social network D Eficiência (VSND) from the perspective of its users. This is a quantitative, exploratory and descriptive research, composed of two stages: the first longitudinal, with the objective of analyzing the results of the dissemination strategies on the number of accesses and registrations that the VSND received in a period of 4 months; the second transversal step, with the objective of evaluating the usability of VSND from the perspective of its users. In the first stage, the data were collected and analyzed through a metric manager (Google Analytics), and in the second stage the data were collected through a validated usability virtual questionnaire. Descriptive and correlational analyzes were performed. The in-person disclosure received 426 accesses in a period of 74 days, of which 285 accesses were converted to VSND users, and the online disclosure, in a period of 18 days, received 4519 accesses, of which 1067 were converted to VSND users. In general, the disclosures, in a period of 4 months, provided the VSND page with 4945 accesses, coming from the state of São Paulo (56%), accessed by cell phone (71%), female people (81%), with a mean age of 41 years. In the second stage, the sample consisted of 110 VSND users, with a predominance of people with disabilities (51.8%), the most commonly diagnosed spinal cord injury being female (33.3%) (68, 2%), with a mean age of 39 years, with a higher educational level (37.2%), employed (44.5%), with an average family income of up to five minimum wages (21.8%) southeast (67.2%), who accessed the VSND by computer (64.5%). VSND was considered excellent or good (82.7%), useful (93%), with good visual (85%), language comprehensible (86.4%) and easy navigation (87.3%). Only 10 participants reported problems using VSND, related to slow loading of pages. The findings of this study contributed to the improvements and updates of VSND. Both strategies of dissemination were positive and complementary among themselves, since they have made VSND more widespread both qualitatively and quantitatively on the internet. Thus, it is advisable to carry out divulgations that involve these types of interlinked strategies for the development of social media on the Internet, both for the greater reach of the target population and to provide qualitative experiences from the direct contact between researchers and participants. VSND has shown itself to be a promising virtual tool, evaluated positively by its users, which fulfills the objective of offering access to information, safely, interactively, with scientifically substantiated content, made available by moderators
